We’ll be going up to a point on the Lake Mountains nicknamed the temple & throne because of the rock cairns people are building, and watching the sunset over the Oquirrh Mountains. This spot also has a fairly good view of Timp and Provo to the east and we may do a morning or sunrise hike here at some point. The meetup location is a small gravel lot on Lake Mountain road located at the provided pin.
This hike is moderate for the average hiker. It’s approximately 4.5-5 miles round trip depending on route, and has an elevation gain of about 1200ft. Depending on who is in the group, I’ll pick one of two routes, with the harder adding several slopes along the ridgeline and about an additional 600ft of elevation to the climb if people are looking for a workout. Either way, this hike will be as much for just being social as for going on a hike so if you’re the kind of hiker who likes to bring a beer on sunset hikes, you’re more than welcome to. Dogs are also ok, so long as you can keep them under control.
This is going to be a rain or shine hike. In the event of lightning or other extreme weather I’ll call off the hike, but come prepared for wind and rain. Because of the location and relative lack of alternative options, I’ll try to post any cancellation or change of plans as far prior to the meet-up time as possible.
The western side of Lake Utah is a distinctly different, more arid climate than the Provo side with different scenery. The western side of the mountains is usually warmer and has some very steep/rocky areas, so it’s highly recommended that you bring plenty of water and appropriate hiking footwear as well as some form of warm clothing for wind. Tennis shoes are at your own risk. For this hike, a light source other than a phone is mandatory. You will need either a head lamp or other dedicated flashlight. Cell phone lights WILL NOT cover you. Eagle Mountain does not provide much ambient light and at least part of the downhill leg will be in the dark.
