Folk / Americana / Singer/Songwriter
Hailed as an “Americana prodigy” by Rolling Stone and as a “wunderkind” by American Songwriter, Brue is a remarkable young talent that is already building an impressive body of work. After receiving a guitar from his father for Christmas in 2011, Brue quickly took to the instrument and started learning the songs of his father’s musical heroes like Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie. Within two months, he wrote his first song, “The Woody Guthrie Song,” at the age of 10. Last year, Brue self-released his second EP, I Don’t Want You To Leave, a devastatingly beautiful collection of songs that touches on heartbreak, jealousy, religion and suicide. The release elicited praise from Rolling Stone and The Fader with the former enthusing, “On songs like the title track, it’s nearly impossible not to think of a young Bob Dylan discovering Woody Guthrie, cutting his teeth in New York bars,” adding, “There’s a youthful vitality; a stripped, naked starkness only someone without years of thickly built insecurities crusted on like a shell could hit, but the maturity is still a little uncanny.”
Brue’s acumen coupled with his fierce drive and dedication have caught the attention of the songwriting community and has even earned him the respect of two of his main musical inspirations–songwriters Joe Fletcher and Justin Townes Earle have become something of mentors to him. Fletcher recently told the Standard Examiner he was first “struck by the authenticity and emotional maturity of Brue’s songs,” adding, “He’s an amazing sponge for music. When you listen, you realize he’s tuned into something that’s really special. His music comes from the heart.” Earle championed his protégé by featuring him on the cover of his 2014 album, Single Mothers.
A native of Portland, Ore., now living in Ogden, Utah, Brue cut his teeth by busking on the sidewalk during the Sundance Film Festival while in the fourth grade. Looking to raise extra cash to buy more music gear, his stunning and sincere performances turned heads of famous actors, musicians and press alike, prompting the festival to invite him back every year since. Brue maintains a workmanlike schedule, playing shows several times a month, and has performed in New York, Los Angeles, Nashville and Salt Lake City. He has opened for Hayes Carll, Justin Townes Earle, Lucinda Williams, Asleep at the Wheel, John Moreland, Lydia Loveless, Lukas Nelson, Joe Pug and Joshua Black Wilkins and has already performed at the Newport Folk Festival and Summerfest. His hard work has earned him endorsements from The Loar Guitars and GHS Strings.
