This is a steep training hike with great views. We will stop by the ruins of the Fernwood cabin. The hike to the cabin (built by Frank Williams and sons[masked]) is just over 3 miles round trip with a 1447 ft gain in elevation (cabin elevation: 6729′). After the detour to the cabin, we will continue up the mountain and set a turn around time to be finished by 12:30 PM.
The Kay’s Ridge trail does continue to Layton Peak, but we’re not going that far. Gloves and/or trekking poles might be handy on the way down in case rocks slide out under your feet.
The hike starts at the Fernwood Trailhead.
From Highway 89 in Layton Utah turn east onto 1500 North (Cherry Lane) then left (north) on Valley View Drive. Drive 0.6 mile and turn right on Fernwood Road (2000 north). Fernwood Road has several curves. Make a right at the T intersection (Snowsqualamie). You should see a tremendous “Castle” home on your left, and then enter the Forest Service trailhead area.
