We will do a loop trail in Fruit Heights. Starting on the Shepard Canyon trail, we’ll ascend to the Power Line trail. When we turn left onto the Fruit Heights Upper Terrace trail at 5140′, we’ll be done with the uphill climb. From this point, the trail is mostly flat until Bair Canyon. We will descend at Bair Canyon and then return via the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. We’ll get all the tough hiking done at the beginning, then cruise along easily for the rest of the hike.
On the BST we will see the Scott Nye Memorial and the Bella Vista Mine. Bring a flashlight or headlamp to explore the mine which goes back about 30 feet. There are great views of the valley and the Great Salt Lake from the upper terrace trail. This is a good introductory loop to discover all the various trails which branch off that you can explore later. The distance is 3.7 miles and our group hiked it in less than 2 hours in 2018.
To reach the trailhead: Get on North Main street in Farmington. Turn onto 1400 North. Head east (uphill) on this road until you hit a “T” intersection. This is N Compton Road or also named 400 West. Turn left on N Compton Road. In about 0.3 miles look for a red fire hydrant. There is waterfall on the right side of the road. If you see a sign that says “Hidden Springs” on the right you went too far. Park on the side of the road at the trailhead.
