BRIGHAM CITY — A pair of exhibitions celebrating the sesquicentennial of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad opens here Saturday.
“The Spike at 150: Myths and Realities” goes on display Saturday, March 23, and continues through June 15 at the Brigham City Museum of Art & History, 24 N. 300 West. The display explores the history and legends behind building a railroad across the country.
According to a news release from the museum: “Is there really a mass grave of Chinese workers in the Brigham City Cemetery? Did competing workers blow each other up as they approached Promontory? What was Utah’s role in the work? The exhibition explores a bevy of legends through photographs, archival materials and original artifacts.”
One of the exhibits, “Zhi Lin: Tracing Chinese Workers’ Footsteps to Promontory Summit,” displays sketches and paintings by the artist, who spent more than a decade exploring the history of Chinese workers in the western United States. Zhi Lin’s works in this exhibit will include both representational and abstract pieces.
A number of special programs at the museum will accompany the exhibits:
• Zhi Lin will speak about his art at 3 p.m. April 20.
• Old Glory Vintage Dancers will present a historical dance demonstration/instruction at 3 p.m. May 4.
• A late-night event will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. June 10, with a historical fashion show covering the 18th to 20th centuries.
Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
