Weber library offers ‘Salute to Veterans’

OGDEN — The Weber County Library will present “A Salute to Our Veterans” here next week.

The event begins at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, at the main library, 2464 Jefferson Ave. Admission is free.

“A Salute to Our Veterans” will begin with a special screening of the acclaimed documentary “In Their Own Words: The Tuskegee Airmen.” It will be followed by a flag ceremony and a speech by Weber County Commissioner Jim Harvey, who will pay tribute to local veterans. The Utah Military Academy Choir will also perform during the salute to veterans.

“In Their Own Words” tells the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African American pursuit squadron in the U.S. military. They served during World War II, hailed as one of the most respected fighter groups in the war, and helped pave the way for an integrated military.

“We are really excited about this program, which will celebrate the service our veterans have given this country,” librarian Kristi-Lyn Blamires wrote in an email to the Standard-Examiner.

NEXT Ensemble giving military-themed show

OGDEN — In honor of Veterans Day, the military-themed concert “When Johnny Comes Marching Home” is being offered by NEXT Ensemble.

The group will first present the program in an all-ages concert at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at Union Grill, 315 24th St. It will then follow that up with a repeat performance at the age-21-and-older nightclub Alleged, 201 Historic 25th St.

According to a news release, NEXT Ensemble is an Ogden-based nonprofit instrumental group focused on “transforming the concert experience.” The idea is to perform music — typically classical music — at nontraditional venues. The group regularly plays concerts at Alleged, as well as in the banquet space at Union Grill. In December, NEXT Ensemble will present a fully staged opera, “Amahl and the Night Visitors,” in the ballroom of The Bigelow Hotel in downtown Ogden.

Each performance features a host who offers live program notes in a casual manner, to give more detail and understanding of the pieces that are played. The ensemble also partners with a community nonprofit each year, to raise awareness for that organization. This year’s partner is Ogden Nature Center.

The group consists of musicians from Ogden and the surrounding areas. It provides an opportunity for local musicians to perform chamber music on a regular basis, for pay.

This year’s Veterans Day-inspired concert will feature String Quartet No. 1 (“From the Salvation Army”) by Charles Ives, “Ashoken Farewell” by Jay Unger, an arrangement of the “Armed Forces Salute,” and a string quartet version of “When Johnny Comes Marching Home.”

Tickets for each of the two concerts are $10. Admission is free to military members and veterans. Children age 16 and younger are admitted free to the Union Grill concert.
