A guide to movies from a family perspective:

‘‘Oblivion”

Rated: PG-13.

Suitable for: Teens and older.

What you should know: Tom Cruise stars in this movie set on a postapocalyptic Earth in the year 2077. He is a drone repairman who, with his navigator and romantic partner (Andrea Riseborough), is two weeks away from leaving the planet and joining other survivors on a Saturn moon. But the arrival of a visitor who seems familiar to him throws those plans and much more into jeopardy.

Language: One F-word, a couple of uses of profanity and a dozen or so four-letter words or “S.O.B.” used in full.

Sexual situations and nudity: Some naked backs while showering, a couple kiss, and she slips out of her clothing to swim naked in an outdoor pool, and you see her from behind.

Violence/scary situations: A lot, starting with the notion that the moon was destroyed, in turn playing havoc with Earth. A war further drove survivors away from the planet, which has some ruinous remnants of recognizable life, but large swaths of uninhabited land are patrolled by drones, haunted by alien-looking scavengers or off-limits due to radiation. Shots are fired, a man is held captive, a vessel lands in fiery pieces and several survivors are killed, and there are potentially disturbing twists.

Alcohol and drug use: None.
