It’s no joke — Ogden’s own Vintage Cupcake Co. will be featured on The Food Network’s next series of “Cupcake Wars,” airing at 6 p.m. on April 1.
Owner Michelle Flowers said she sent an audition tape to the program last summer and flew to Los Angeles for the taping in the fall of 2011. Not only did that keep her busy, but she was also working on moving the store’s location to Historic 25th Street.
She opened at her previous location on Ogden’s 24th Street in the summer of 2010 and moved to her new store last month.
The new cupcakery features the same bar made from a wall of doors that the old place had, as well as a green velvet couch and vintage signage. Flowers shares the space with Carrie Vondrus, owner of Endless Indulgence, a boutique selling women’s dresses from the 1940s and ’50s.
Flowers’ menu now includes more than 100 flavors of cupcakes ($2.95 each or $29 for a dozen), with about a dozen different choices available each day. Customers can count on certain staple flavors, such as chocolate, vanilla, golden cake with chocolate frosting, and her signature Pink Lady — a chocolate cupcake with pink vanilla cream frosting and edible pearls.
Other favorites that frequent the rotation include Cookies and Cream, chocolate cake with an Oreo and white chocolate chip center topped with Oreo cream cheese frosting; and the BTA, which stands for “Better Than Anything,” made from a chocolate cake, sweetened condensed milk, chocolate and butterscotch syrups and a cream cheese frosting mixed with toffee, nuts, chocolate chips, butterscotch chips and peanut butter chips.
The Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough cupcake is a vanilla cake with a ball of cookie dough baked in the center, topped with chocolate frosting and a mini homemade cookie.
Some of Flowers’ more unique flavors include French Toast, Margarita Lime and Green Jell-O.
She recently added a cupcake called Half Baked, with cookie dough, Oreos and brownies in and on the cupcake; and another creation called the Mountain Dew, a cupcake that tastes like the popular drink.
Flowers said she has always been a creative person and has a degree in interior design. Her style gravitates toward antiques. She said she has also always loved cupcakes, especially personalizing them and making them both delicious and beautiful.
