'Sealskin Boat' named Best of Show

"Sealskin Boat" by Jim Stettler won Best of Show honors in the 17th Statewide Photographic Competition.

OGDEN — “Sealskin Boat,” by Jim Stettler of Pleasant View, was named Best of Show in the 17th Statewide Photographic Competition at the Eccles Community Art Center.

Stettler captured the image of a traditional Inupiat Eskimo boat while living in Alaska.

“This impressive monochrome print illustrates the highest ideals in photographic value,” said juror Jon Williams of Ogden, in a press release announcing the awards. “It is technically excellent, visually provocative, historically important, visually intriguing, full of honesty, and is a worthy example of traditional fine photography.”

Of the 213 pieces entered in the competition by professional and amateur photographers from across the state, 113 were selected for display. The Best of Show award included a $300 prize.

Honorable mentions, worth $100 each, were awarded to, among others, Stephen Smith of South Ogden. Awarded a $50 Juror’s Recognition awards were Bruce Olsen of Harrisville, Mike Owens of Liberty, and Barry Parsons of Wellsville.

The exhibit continues 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays, through May 28. Admission to the Eccles Community Art Center, at 2580 Jefferson Ave., is free. For more information, call 801-392-6935.
