Halloween isn't always dark and spooky. Sometimes it's huggable, like Winnie the Pooh, or comical, like Calvin and Hobbs.
Or it might be just a little bit angry, like those popular Angry Birds.
These and other characters will be featured as part of a "My Favorite Things" theme at this year's North Logan Pumpkin Walk, opening Thursday.
More than 30 scenes created out of pumpkins and other garden produce will be set up for viewing at Elk Ridge Park, 1100 E. 2500 North, North Logan.
Gilligan's Island, Plants vs. Zombies, camping, Candy Land and the films "Despicable Me," "Tangled," "Annie" and "A Christmas Story" are also in the lineup.
New this year will be a pumpkin toss on Oct. 29, after the event ends. Folks can gather at the park at 1 p.m. to try their hand at throwing pumpkins used in the display, or to watch Utah State University mechanical engineering students toss the orange orbs.
"They're going to make some catapults and some other devices to launch the pumpkins," says Gina Worthen of North Logan, a member of the event-planning committee.
The pumpkin walk, which began in 1982, is a "charming" event, Worthen says, that minimizes the fright factor of the holiday so "little kids don't have to be scared."
"There's something magical about it that I haven't been able to put my finger on," she says.
