On Feb. 15, husband and wife Dave and Maggie Rees opened the doors to their new restaurant, Pizza Pomodoro.
No strangers to running their own business, the Rees' have owned a custom-framing shop for years and currently run Pintura Fine Arts -- offering an art gallery, custom framing and digital framing in Ogden. This year, they decided to branch out; they had always wanted to own a pizza parlor.
"I love to cook," Maggie Rees said.
Her specialty is Mexican food, and she began researching how to combine the two ideas. In the end, they came up with a menu featuring both Italian and Mexican pizza.
"At first, we were skeptical of this concept," Maggie Rees said.
But her research showed that Mexican food is becoming more mainstream, making pizza toppings like chili verde, carne asada and chorizo less exotic to the average diner.
Their pizzas begin with a hand-tossed, hand-stretched crust, made fresh to order. Keeping with the couple's most important philosophy to "keep it simple," the crust does not contain much in the way of spices, to allow the toppings to be the main attraction.
Some of their Mexican specialty pizzas include The Mexican ($12.99/12-inch pie), with beans, spicy chorizo, cheese, poblano peppers, jalapenos and tomatoes; the Chile Verde ($12.99), with pork chile verde, cheese and tomatoes; and the Carne Asada ($13.99), made with beans, steak, cheese, tomatoes, jalapenos and poblano peppers.
On the Italian side, some popular pizzas include the Pomodoro Combo ($12.99), with pepperoni, ham, Italian sausage, green peppers, mushrooms and onions; the Meat Lovers ($12.99), with pepperoni, Italian sausage, salami and ham; and the Veggie Lovers ($11.99), with mushrooms, black olives, tomatoes and green peppers.
The restaurant welcomes families and offers a kids menu with choices such as a 6-inch cheese pizza, ice cream and a drink ($3.99). And, for dessert, the establishment serves Farr's ice cream ($1.50).
Besides keeping things simple and fresh, Maggie Rees said they also strive to buy from local vendors whenever possible.
