WASHINGTON TERRACE — Hmong immigrants are the focus of the next “Healing Through the Ages” film and book discussion at the Weber County Library’s Pleasant Valley branch.

“Between Two Worlds: The Hmong Shaman in America” will be screened at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 28, at the library, 5568 S. Adams Ave. The 27-minute documentary was made in 2008 and focuses on the lives of three Hmong families from northern Laos who find themselves living alienated lives in American cities.

A book discussion on “The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down” follows at 7 p.m. The 1998 book by Anne Fadiman won the National Book Critics Circle Award for nonfiction.

The book follows the true story of Lia Lee, a child born to Hmong immigrants in California. When the baby developed epilepsy, a culture clash ensued between her parents and the American doctors treating her.

The free program is presented by the Utah Humanities Council. For more information, call 801-337-2690.
