Capsule reviews, by Standard-Examiner movie critic Steve Salles, of this week's releases on DVD:
REDEMPTION: FOR ROBBING THE DEAD ** 1/2 (PG) Thematic material and some violence. This local production takes the gruesome true story of an 1862 grave robber (Jean Baptiste, who is exiled to Utah's Antelope Island) and turns it into a "Les Miz" tale of redemption and forgiveness. Unfortunately, historical accounts don't coincide. That's too bad, because the filmmakers had something here and turned it into something unrecognizable. 105 minutes.
THE MAID ** 1/2 (Not rated) In Spanish with subtitles. A family maid for 23 years is starting to lose her perspective on life. She has taken care of this affluent Chilean family for so long, she never takes time out for herself -- and worse, has forgotten how. She will resist change, but change is coming, like it or not. This is a well- acted, out-of-the-norm kind of movie.
Also being released:
ATM (R) Violence and terror. After leaving their company Christmas party together, David Hargrove and Emily Brandt's impromptu first date takes an unexpected turn when their co-worker, Corey, asks them to make a late-night stop at an ATM. 90 minutes.
HIJACKED (R) Violence, language and some sexuality. A special agent's plans to reconcile with his ex-fiance are ruined when she boards a private jet that is targeted by hijackers working for the same crime lord that he is chasing.
LOL (PG-13) Mature thematic content involving teen sexuality and drug and alcohol use, and for language. Miley Cyrus stars in this film about a broken-hearted teenager who is surprised by her best friend, a promising musician who reveals his feelings for her. 97 minutes.
"The Lucky One" will be released on Aug. 28. The release date was listed incorrectly in last week's edition.
