'Filly Gawkers' takes home top prize at Traces art show

OGDEN -- Steve Johnson was the big winner in this year's Traces of the West art show. Johnson, of Huntsville, took first place in the masters division, earning $1,500 for his painting "Filly Gawkers."

Second place, and $750, went to Kelly Donovan of Corinne, with West Haven artist Jeff Hepworth taking the third prize of $500.

The Traces of the West art show, held in conjunction with the Ogden Pioneer Days celebration, focuses on Western art. Ogden Pioneer Days Rodeo Committee Awards, worth $500 each, were given to David Jackson of Mountain Green, George Handrahan of Kaysville, with Donovan taking a prize for his second entry.

Mary Wells of Ogden earned first place in the novice division, with a $500 prize, for "Utah Book." Second place, and $300, went to John Steele of Salt Lake City, and the $100 third-place prize was given to Doug Stephens of Ogden.

Winners were also named in the Paint Yer Cowboy Boot Boogie contest, in which contestants painted boots. Becky Espinoza of South Weber was awarded $300 for first place, for "Roosters & Chicken Wire." Second place, worth $200, went to Ellen Fowers of Liberty, and the $100 prize for third place was bestowed on Dianne Dalton of Salt Lake City.

The Traces of the West art show continues 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, through July 31, in Gallery 51, in Union Station at 2501 Wall Ave. Admission is free.
