ANTELOPE ISLAND — Fielding Garr Ranch’s Cowboy Poetry Series spotlights an award-winning cowgal on Saturday, June 30.

Sam DeLeeuw will perform at 6 p.m. at the ranch on Antelope Island State Park. The Roy poet was named the 2011 Female Cowboy Poet of the Year for the Western Music Association and received the 2008 Will Rogers Award for Humorist of the Year from the Academy of Western Artists.

A past president of the Cowboy Poets of Utah, DeLeeuw appears often at shows, schools, festivals and fairs and judges annually for the National Cowboy Poetry Rodeo competition. Raised in Blackfoot, Idaho, the poet is also a rancher’s wife who has herded horses, cows, sheep and daughters.

A website biography notes that “she can construct a perfect stack of hay, keep a calf warm on the floor of her truck or the floor of her kitchen, and keep the scour medicine in her fridge separate from the salad dressing she made for last night’s supper.” DeLeeuw relies on day-to-day occurrences and family genealogy as the basis for much of her original poetry.

Admission to the state park is $9 per vehicle. The park is west of Syracuse, off Interstate 15’s Exit 332.
