Heidi Christiansen, owner of two Caffe Café locations and the newly opened Salt City Cupcake in Ogden, said she loves coffee and baking, so opening her coffee shops was the natural thing for her to do.
She opened her first Caffe Café in the Newgate Mall in November 2010. A second location followed in South Ogden in the spring of this year. Earlier this month, she opened the doors to Salt City Cupcake on Historic 25th Street — a business that specializes in custom cupcakes, cupcake bouquets, cupcake towers and wedding cakes.
All three locations carry Christiansen’s signature cupcakes in three sizes, large ($2.70), regular ($2.25) and mini ($1.25). She has created recipes for more than 50 flavors, and the menus feature eight choices daily.
Some of the most popular flavors include red velvet (topped with peppermint frosting for the holidays), carrot and vanilla bean.
A new cake for the season is pumpkin spice, with whipped cream on top. One of her more creative cakes is the s’more, made with chocolate cake, a jumbo marshmallow, chocolate ganache and crumbled graham crackers.
The hottest pick for Breast Cancer Awareness Month was the strawberry champagne cupcake, made with fresh strawberries and a touch of champagne flavor.
Other treats include chocolate-dipped strawberries ($2), giant cinnamon rolls ($2.25) and key lime tarts ($2).
Each day at the cafés, there are five soups to choose from ($2.49/cup, $3.99/bowl or $4.99/bread bowl). Some of the most popular are broccoli cheese, pumpkin curry, Wisconsin cheese and vegetarian lentil.
Christiansen said there is always at least one vegetarian soup on the menu, and she offers several vegetarian-friendly meals.
Some popular entrees include the Whole Wheat California Wrap ($5.79), with turkey, bacon, Swiss cheese, veggies and pesto mayo; and the Southwest Chipotle Panini ($5.79), with chicken, pepperjack cheese, chipotle mayo and roasted red peppers.
The Sonoma Chicken Salad Sandwich ($5.79) combines cranberries, apples and almonds in a ranch-based dressing on a croissant. All meals can be made into a combo (add $2.50), which includes a drink, side dish and mini cupcake.
Specialty drinks start at $2.49 and include lattes, chai teas and Italian sodas. All three locations also cater.
