+ What is the cost?
Registration for the training is $225, plus the cost of the books. We understand that $225 is a lot of money and could be a barrier. We encourage you to find friends and family who support comprehensive sexuality education and ask them if they are willing to chip in. Don’t forget to ask older adults, you might be surprised how many people will support the cause. We have a small amount of money for scholarships. If you are interested, please contact Liz Martin.
+ What happens once I get trained?
Once trained, you would be added to a pool of volunteers. When the dates are set for classes, we will reach out and ask for volunteers.
+ Would I need to teach the class by myself?
Each age group uses 4 facilitators, two teachers each week. This enables teachers to teach every other week, be flexible with schedules and have a co-teacher present for each class (a must for safety!) We hope to get enough volunteers trained so there are plenty of people willing to teach for each grade.
+ How often do you run classes?
Each organization will set their own schedule, but South Valley Unitarian Universalist Society would like to run each OWL age group once a year. If the interest increases, we will increase our classes.
+ I don’t live in Salt Lake or Ogden, can I still get trained?
Yes! You can be trained and take the OWL program to your community.
+ What if I don’t belong to a UU church or plan to teach it at a UU church?
You do not have to belong to a UU church to get trained. The curriculum can be taught without the faith-based component, with one adjustment to the program. Contact the organizers for more information.
+ How old do I have to be in order to be trained.
You must be a minimum of 25 to be trained as a facilitator.
+ What if I cannot stay for the whole training?
You must be able to stay for the entire training in order to be certified to teach OWL. We take this training very seriously to ensure the safety of those who will participate in the classes.
The hours of the training may vary slightly, but you should anticipate being at the training from 4:00-9:00 p.m. Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. Saturday, and 8:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. on Sunday. All meals will be provided.
+ Do we learn the entire curriculum in just two days?
The training does not go over every lesson you will be teaching. Over the weekend, facilitators are trained on how to teach the material, such as inclusivity, appropriate boundaries and keeping a good sense of humor, as well as the resources and skills you’ll need to stay up-to-date with the material you present.
Thank you for your interest! We hope to see you in November!
