OUR FEATURED ARTIST THIS MONTH:
Joseph Eilander from The Shark Shack, I am 17 years old. I love animals, fantasy, Steampunk, drawing, wood-burning and all things’ art. I can’t remember a time I haven’t drawn, its just what I do.

I enjoy Zentangle its enjoyable and very relaxing and you really can’t mess it up. Its a doodle.

Animals fascinate me I love to study them, discover their traits, learn their habits and draw them. I would say reptiles and birds are my favorite to draw. All those scales and feathers. Lately I have been doing more fantasy and Steampunk. I love all those details. Dragons have all those scales going into the fantasy and Steam punk realms I can do alot more of my own things, things people haven’t seen before.

I sell my prints of my drawings. I draw in pencil then take it to the computer make it look the way I want it to look and then have printed. I find this gives me a lot of freedom as an artist and still sell my work at an affordable price. I have been going through making sure I have at least of one of each type of animal. If you don’t see something you like message me I would love to add more to my drawings.

My wood burnings are done for the most part on reclaimed wood. Pallets, wood siding old logs people are going to throw away, its all good and I am willing to work with what ever comes my way. I do use some new woods as people seem to really have enjoyed my wood spoons and boxes. Each piece is handcrafted and done freehand so even If I do a similar animal later each is original. The detail in these are so fun to do.

I love to teach classes. I love seeing people learn a new art. Most people don’t realize how fun this art can be. It is time-consuming as it is a slow art. My large pallet pieces can take 30 hours or more for me to do. I draw an outline in pencil of what I want to create as I have discovered that things move as you fill things in so an outline keeps things in proportion and where you want them. Then I Burn the wood just like you would draw with a pen or pencil. Its a lot of fun to see the animals come to life. With covid 19 I am starting to create Grab and Go kits for drawing, and I am trying to figure out a wood burning kit. I hope to add a drawing zoom class this Fall. I will be teaching how to draw by looking at a picture. I am excited for this class.

I have been selling my artwork for 7 years at local farmers markets and shows. At 12, I decided this is what I want to do with my life. I can’t imagine a life without art. I have been selling my art here at the Local Artisan collective for a little over 2 years, it has been an amazing experience learning all I can about promoting my business, learning social media and getting to know the most amazing people.

If you are by the shop when I am in say Hi I love to show people what I am working on.
