Obama threatened the Second Amendment? That's fake news talk

I felt disappointment when I read Matt Mortensen’s April 9 letter, “Obama threatened every American’s right to keep and bear arms.” People still believe that President Obama planned to take their guns? Is that what common sense background checks leads people to believe? There were no anti-gun regulations passed by the Obama administration. That is fake news talk, meant to incite fear and anxiety. Fake news and rumor employed by well-funded special interest groups and highly paid attorneys has craftily convinced Americans and our courts that the danger exists.

The Second Amendment will never be taken from us, though it could be modified for the better. The first four words of the amendment, “A well regulated militia,” are really what it is about. Former Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens understood, writing in The Washington Post, “Concern that a national standing army might pose a threat to the security of the separate states led to the adoption of the Second Amendment.” In United States v. Miller, 1939 the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that Congress could prohibit the possession of certain weapons that had no reasonable relation to the preservation or efficiency of a well regulated militia. But, as Stevens continued, “Organizations like the National Rifle Association disagreed with that position and mounted a vigorous campaign claiming that federal regulation of the use of firearms severely curtailed Americans’ Second Amendment rights.”

In December 1991, Chief Justice Warren Burger stated during an interview on the “MacNeil/Lehrer Newshour” that the Second Amendment “has been the subject of one of the greatest pieces of fraud, I repeat the word ‘fraud,’ on the American public by special interest groups that I have ever seen in my lifetime.”

As long as big money continues to permeate American politics, corporations and special interests, including the gun industry, will thrive and the people will be on the losing side.
