Eight free things to do in the aftermath of the government shutdown

OGDEN — The 35-day government shutdown did a number on Ogden’s economy.

And although federal employees are now back to work — and actually getting paid for it — the effects on the community linger.

In honor of the belt-tightening that’s occurred, here are eight free things happening in the next week (plus three bonus events later in the month) that offer a chance to get out of the house and blow off a little steam.

1. CATCH A POLYPHONIC SHRINES CONCERT (OR TWO)

Melodic indie rockers Mother Lights and psychedelic folk band Water Babies are offering a week-long series of free one-hour concerts — with a poetry reading sandwiched between sets — around downtown Ogden. The final four shows include:

• Noon Friday at Coffee Compound, 2417 Grant Ave.

• 6 p.m. Saturday at Lavender Vinyl, 123 Historic 25th St.
