Red Dress Concert, writer’s conference, circus coming to Northern Utah

Red Dress Concert planned for Peery’s Egyptian Theater

OGDEN — Chamber Orchestra Ogden’s annual Red Dress Concert takes place this weekend at Peery’s Egyptian Theater.

The event, sponsored by Ogden Regional Medical Center, is presented in recognition of February’s American Heart Month.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at the theater, 2415 Washington Blvd.

Two of the orchestra’s musicians will be featured during the evening. To begin the concert, principal oboist Karen Hastings will perform a movement of Mozart’s Concerto in C for Oboe and Orchestra, followed by assistant concertmaster Elissa Krebs featured on the Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso by Saint-Saens.

Following a brief presentation about heart health from Ogden Regional Medical Center, the concert will conclude with Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3 in A.

Well-behaved children age 8 and older are welcome to attend.

Tickets are $8, available through www.smithstix.com or 801-689-8700. Active military, veterans and their families are admitted free, as are music students ages 8 to 18.

Wasatch Writers Fellowship hosting conference

KAYSVILLE — The Wasatch Writers Fellowship will hold its third annual writers conference this weekend at the Hopebox Theatre.

The event will feature seminars and panels for writers to improve their craft, hone their stories and get published. Among the presentations are “Diversity of Characters in Science Fiction and Fantasy,” “Writing Action Scenes,” “Indie Publishing,” and “On Becoming a Writer.”

Best-selling author Dan Wells will be this year’s keynote speaker. Wells is best known for his “I Am Not a Serial Killer” series; he’s also written a variety of young adult novels in the horror and science fiction genres, including the “Partials” series and the “Mirador” novels.

Registration begins at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, with seminars and panels continuing until 9 p.m. that day. The conference then continues from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26. The theater is at 1700 Frontage Road, in Kaysville.

Tickets are $25 in advance, at www.writersfellowship.command, or $28 at the door. Admission includes the kick-off party, the silent auction, and a book-signing with Wells.

The Wasatch Writers Fellowship was started in 2015.

Jordan World Circus comes to town

OGDEN — The traveling circus is coming to town.

The Jordan World Circus makes a stop in Ogden this weekend, with shows at 7 p.m. Friday, 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, and 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday in the Golden Spike Event Center, 1000 N. 1200 West, in Ogden. The circus features aerial acts, trained poodles, horse riders, elephants, tigers and more.

Tickets are $9 to $30, available at www.thejordanworldcircus.com.

And if you miss the Ogden show, the Jordan World Circus makes a stop at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at the Legacy Events Center, 151 S. 1100 West, in Farmington.

The traveling circus is based out of Las Vegas.
