Come along for a hayride in Layton Commons Park

LAYTON — Old-fashioned hayrides in the park return to Layton again this holiday season.

For the past 23 years, Burger Stop, Wasatch Rods and Customs Car Club and Layton City have teamed up to provide hayrides through the city’s Lights Before Christmas display in Layton Commons Park.

This year, hayrides will be offered from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on three consecutive Fridays/Saturdays — Nov. 30-Dec. 1, Dec. 7-8, and Dec. 14-15. Rides begin outside the Burger Stop restaurant, 323 E. Gentile St.

Hayrides cost $2 for adults and $1 for children. Age 4 and younger ride free. All rides are on a first-come, first-served basis.

Organizers say all proceeds will be donated to local charities. Since the hayrides began in 1993, more than $90,000 has been donated to charity.

Santa will also be on hand during the event. Families are invited to bring cameras, as children can sit on Santa’s lap for free.

Hot cocoa will be available.

Ogden Nature Center offers antidote to hectic holiday shopping

OGDEN — Holiday shopping is usually anything but relaxing.

The Ogden Nature Center begs to differ.

Its annual Holiday Open House is coming this Saturday, offering visitors a chance to do a little Christmas shopping and find serenity wandering the center’s nature trails. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Ogden Nature Center, 966 W. 12th St.

Admission is free.

A local artisan fair and fancy bake sale are among the activities offered. The center’s Nest Gift Shop sells potted succulents, nature-related books, stationary, toys, games, art, bird feeders, jewelry, casual clothing and more.

For those making purchases, complimentary gift-wrapping is included.

A make-and-take nature craft for kids will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. that day. Free hot chocolate is also on tap.

Also popular at the Holiday Open House are fresh evergreen holiday swags and centerpieces. Organizers caution to arrive early for those — the swags in particular sell out quickly.
