SNOWBASIN — The Johnny Utahs and The Gringos continue the music at Snowbasin Resort’s free Blues, Brews & BBQ concert series this weekend.

The weekly event begins at noon Sunday, Sept. 9, on the outdoor stage next to Earl’s Lodge at the resort, 3925 E. Snowbasin Road, above Huntsville. The Gringos take the stage at 12:30 p.m., followed by The Johnny Utahs at 3 p.m.

Founded four years ago in Ogden, The Johnny Utahs are a favorite with local crowds. The band features Brett Turner on rhythm guitar and vocals, Ryan Hawthorn on electric guitar and lap steel, Jeffrey Aaron on bass, and Jason Vaughn on drums.

Band members describe their music as a mix tape of Johnny Cash and Jack White. Their distinctive name comes from the fact they rehearse in a Utah studio with black floors and black walls, covered in old Johnny Cash memorabilia. A couple of the band members are also fans of the cult classic film “Point Break,” which stars Keanu Reeves as the character “Johnny Utah.”

Founded by Nate Robinson, The Gringos are a reggae/ska band from Salt Lake City. With influences ranging from afrobeat and jazz to punk rock and psychedelia, the band offers a distinctive spin on those music genres.

The Gringos feature a number of veterans from the Utah music scene, including former member of groups like Two and a Half White Guys, Stretch Armstrong, Insatiable, My Man Friday and Sturgeon General.

No outside food or beverage is allowed. Dogs are welcome — except in the lodges or on the patio — but must be on a leash at all times. Umbrellas, shade tents and chairs are also permitted.

A barbecue lunch, as well as several local brews on tap, will be available for sale. There are also activities and games for children, including a bungee jump, climbing wall and a playground.

Admission is free.
